ZetaChain votes to close Layer 1 blockchain, transfer ZETA tokens to Solana.
ZetaChain is making a significant change to its blockchain infrastructure as the ZETA token community has voted to approve the proposal to close ZetaChain’s Layer 1 network and transfer ZETA tokens to Solana.
The vote on Proposal 68 concluded at 10:58 AM on September 20, ET, with 99.4% of votes in favor of the plan. The participation rate reached 58%, surpassing the minimum quorum requirement of 40%. Among the total votes, the opposition and abstention rates were both at 0.3%.
This move marks a significant shift in ZetaChain’s development direction. The project had raised $27 million about three years ago with the goal of building a blockchain capable of connecting different blockchain ecosystems. However, ZetaChain now believes that maintaining a separate Layer 1 blockchain is no longer necessary for its new development direction, especially as the project focuses on Anuma, an AI application launched in February.
Under the new plan, Anuma will be moved to Solana, and the ZETA token will also be transferred to this network. ZetaChain states that Anuma currently has over 300,000 users according to self-reported figures, and has processed approximately 1 million requests through 35 different AI models.
One of Anuma’s core features is its encrypted memory system, allowing user information to be maintained and utilized across multiple AI models. ZETA holders can also lock tokens to receive credits for using AI services on the platform.
ZetaChain believes that Solana currently has a relatively developed AI ecosystem and infrastructure, but still lacks a layer of applications for general users. According to the project team, this gap lies in applications that users can frequently use, while allowing their memory to be maintained and moved between various models, applications, and AI agents.
The closure of the separate Layer 1 is also explained by ZetaChain due to the cost and complexity of maintaining a blockchain using the Cosmos SDK. According to the proposal, ZetaChain must receive security alerts and patches from the Cosmos ecosystem, then coordinate deployment with dozens of independent validators. The project team believes that as AI tools increasingly support the detection of security vulnerabilities, the maintenance and handling of issues on a separate blockchain may continue to increase.
ZetaChain cited a security patch released on August 25 as an example of the maintenance requirements the network faces. According to the project, moving to Solana will help the team reduce the operational burden of a separate Layer 1 blockchain and focus more resources on developing Anuma and the AI application layer.
However, the approval of Proposal 68 does not mean ZetaChain will immediately shut down the current blockchain. The network will continue to operate while the team completes the technical steps and processes related to the transition.
According to the plan, ZETA will become a native SPL token on Solana at a 1:1 ratio. The token will retain the ZETA trading symbol and the current total supply. Vesting schedules will also remain unchanged. This transition plan does not include ZETA tokens currently existing on Ethereum and BNB Chain.
ZetaChain will need to pass another proposal in the near future to determine the block height used as the snapshot point, the specific block to stop the network, as well as guide users on receiving tokens on Solana and withdrawing assets connected to the network.
The second proposal will only be put to a vote after exchanges confirm their support for the token transition process. Therefore, ZetaChain has not yet announced the official date for closing Layer 1.
In the meantime, ZETA staking activities on ZetaChain will continue. However, the staking mechanism and rewards after the token transition to Solana have not been fully decided. The project team states that they are continuing to research how to implement staking and rewards for ZETA on Solana.
