The founder of Uniswap, Hayden Adams, recently revealed an interesting story surrounding the domain Uniswap.com and Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF), the former CEO of FTX. According to Adams, the original owner of the domain Uniswap.com once demanded Uniswap pay a seven-figure sum to acquire the domain, equivalent to at least 1 million USD. However, the Uniswap team at the time refused this price.
Subsequently, according to Hayden Adams, Sam Bankman-Fried purchased Uniswap.com for a seven-figure sum and redirected this domain to a fork project of Uniswap. Adams believes this was an action intended to annoy or influence Uniswap, although the specific motive was not confirmed.
Notably, the use of this domain later provided a legal basis for the Uniswap team to regain control of Uniswap.com without paying the owner. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) domain dispute record in 2021 confirmed that Uniswap.com was once redirected to SushiSwap, a competing project built on Uniswap’s open-source code. WIPO later ordered the transfer of the domain to Uniswap Labs.
In a post on X on September 20, 2026, Hayden Adams stated that the original owner of Uniswap.com wanted a seven-figure sum, but Uniswap did not agree. SBF was then said to have bought the domain for a similar price and redirected it to a fork project. Adams mentioned that using the domain in this way allowed Uniswap’s legal team to reclaim the domain without paying a fee.
However, the exact amount SBF is said to have paid has not been disclosed. Hayden Adams also did not provide transaction documents proving the price or the seller’s identity. The public WIPO record of the dispute also does not confirm Sam Bankman-Fried as the direct buyer of the domain or the mentioned seven-figure sum.
The domain dispute was brought to resolution by Uniswap Labs in 2021. According to the WIPO record, the domain Uniswap.com was registered in 2000, many years before the Uniswap protocol was created by Hayden Adams. The domain owner at the time of the dispute was identified in the record as Registration Private, Domains By Proxy LLC / Future XXX in Hong Kong.
WIPO determined that Uniswap.com matched the UNISWAP trademark owned by Uniswap Labs. Notably, this domain was once redirected to a trading page of SushiSwap. The WIPO panel believed that using the domain in this manner could mislead users about the connection between the website and Uniswap Labs and was not considered a good faith use of the domain.
WIPO also rejected the argument that the open-source nature of the Uniswap protocol meant any party could use the Uniswap name in a domain. After reviewing the case, WIPO decided to transfer Uniswap.com to Uniswap Labs in September 2021.
Currently, Uniswap.com remains under the control of Uniswap and is redirected to the official interface of the Uniswap application. Meanwhile, Uniswap.org remains one of the official website addresses used by Uniswap.
