What is RISC Zero?
RISC Zero is an open-source zkVM platform that helps developers build zero-knowledge (ZK) applications using popular programming languages such as Rust, Go, C++, etc. without having to relearn the entire ZK ecosystem from scratch.
RISC Zero’s first open-source product – RISC Zero Virtual Machine (zkVM) was launched in March 2022. zkVM allows any program to be executed verifiably without a trusted third party. This opens up the possibility of building decentralized, secure, and developer-friendly Web3 applications, similar to traditional Web2 applications.
Going beyond zkVM, RISC Zero is building a highly scalable next-generation blockchain that combines zero-knowledge proof technology with a virtual machine based on the RISC-V architecture, providing a powerful infrastructure layer for future decentralized applications.
On August 9, 2022, RISC Zero announced the successful raising of $12 million in a Seed round, led by Bain Capital Crypto. Participating investors include Cota Capital, D1 Ventures, Geometry, along with several prominent individuals in the industry such as Meltem Demirors and Kain Warwick (founder of Synthetix).
Following the success, on July 19, 2023, RISC Zero continued to complete a Series A round worth $40 million. Leading this round was Blockchain Capital, with the participation of major funds such as Delphi Ventures, Galaxy, Fenbushi Capital, IOSG Ventures, Bain Capital Crypto and many other investment funds in the crypto/web3 field.
