Hollywood director Carl Erik Rinsch, known for the film 47 Ronin, has been sentenced by a U.S. court to 30 months in prison after embezzling $11 million from the production budget of a television series to speculate in stocks, cryptocurrencies, and lavish spending.
According to information from the U.S. Department of Justice cited by The Block, Carl Rinsch deceived a streaming platform by claiming he needed an additional $11 million to complete the production of the science fiction series White Horse. However, instead of using this money for the project, Rinsch transferred the entire amount to his personal account for investment and personal spending activities.
Court records show that during the 2018–2019 period, the streaming platform disbursed approximately $44 million for the White Horse project. Subsequently, at Rinsch’s request, the company provided an additional $11 million to complete filming and post-production.
Instead of serving the production, the director used the funds to trade stock options and speculate in the financial market. Within about two months, he lost more than half of the capital in stock trading.
The remaining funds were further used by Rinsch for large-scale personal expenses. According to the prosecution, he paid off at least $1.7 million in credit card debt, spent about $3.3 million on furniture and high-end antiques, nearly $2.4 million to acquire several luxury cars including Rolls-Royce and a Ferrari, and approximately $387,000 on luxury watches.
In addition to stock investments, Carl Rinsch also used part of the embezzled funds to speculate in cryptocurrencies. Although the trial records did not disclose the specific digital assets he traded or the investment results, the use of the film project’s budget for financial speculation became a significant factor leading to the sentence.
Besides the 30-month prison sentence, the U.S. court also ordered Carl Rinsch to pay a fine of $11 million, equivalent to the amount embezzled, and to undergo 3 years of probation after serving his prison term. During this time, he will be under the supervision of authorities and must comply with court-imposed conditions.
