Cointelegraph is reportedly seeking a buyer amid a significant drop in website traffic, from over 12 million visits per month to just about 700,000 visits, according to information reported by CoinDesk.
Cointelegraph is one of the oldest and largest cryptocurrency news sites in the crypto industry. Founded in 2013, the platform has built its brand for over a decade and currently has more than 200 employees. However, Cointelegraph’s operations are said to be significantly affected after the website was subjected to a manual penalty by Google in October 2025.
According to data from Similarweb cited by CoinDesk, Cointelegraph’s monthly traffic has dropped dramatically in less than two years. In December 2024, the website recorded over 12 million visits per month. By early September 2026, this number had fallen to just over 700,000 visits, equivalent to a decrease of about 94% from the peak recorded at the end of 2024.
This decline is believed to be related to the loss of traffic from the Google search engine. If a news website relies significantly on organic search, being subjected to a Google manual penalty can drastically reduce its visibility in search results, thereby directly impacting readership, advertising revenue, and the commercial value of the platform.
In this context, CoinDesk reported that Cointelegraph is seeking a buyer. However, this information was immediately denied by Cointelegraph itself.
A representative of Cointelegraph stated: “We are not for sale.” Cointelegraph also accused CoinDesk of publishing false information and making several factual errors.
