Base Build has officially introduced Base Verify Onchain, an on-chain identity verification solution designed to address the Sybil Attack problem—one of the biggest challenges Web3 projects face when implementing airdrops, reward programs, and decentralized governance mechanisms.
According to the announcement published on July 28, the new feature has been deployed on the Base Sepolia test network, allowing developers to integrate directly into smart contracts to apply the principle of “one real user, one claim.” This helps projects limit the situation where an individual uses dozens or hundreds of different wallets to claim rewards multiple times, thereby enhancing fairness in the ecosystem.
Over the years, Sybil Attack has become a major challenge for the blockchain industry. Airdrop programs often attract a large number of users creating multiple wallets, using bots or automated tools to hunt for rewards. In many cases, most of the tokens distributed end up in the hands of professional “airdrop farmers” rather than those who truly contribute to the protocol’s development. This has led many projects to continuously change token distribution criteria and invest additional resources to filter suspicious wallet addresses.
Base Build states that Verify Onchain was developed to address this very issue. Instead of collecting sensitive personal information such as names, addresses, or account data, the system creates a stable identity hash for each user after completing the verification process. This identifier helps the project recognize multiple wallets that may belong to the same user while still ensuring privacy.
Users can complete the verification step through accounts they use daily, such as Coinbase, Instagram, X, or TikTok. Once the verification process is complete, the system will send a verified identity certificate to the smart contract. Based on this certificate, the contract can automatically enforce various rules such as limiting the number of airdrop claims, restricting voting rights, controlling reward limits, or applying appropriate token distribution mechanisms.
Bringing the verification process directly onto the blockchain also helps developers reduce reliance on centralized censorship systems. Instead of having to build a user database or store personal information, the project only needs to check the verified identity certificate to make decisions in the smart contract, thereby maintaining the transparency and automation capabilities of decentralized applications.
According to Base Build, Verify Onchain has already been used over 300,000 times and is serving many products in the ecosystem such as Base App, Cody, Scratch, and Bracket. This number indicates the growing demand for identity verification solutions that still protect privacy in the Web3 space.
Not stopping at airdrops, Base hopes Verify Onchain will become the foundation for many other use cases such as fairer token issuance, building DAO governance mechanisms, implementing community reward programs, or establishing on-chain reputation systems based on verified identities. Developers can also convert real-world signals into blockchain reputation to improve user quality without accessing personal data.
